Emerge Lakefront

Emerge Lakefront sits at the edge of a lake in Stora Sköndal, on the southern outskirts of Stockholm. The site has carried institutional life for over a century – for most of its history as a training centre for Christian deacons, a formation that combined inner development, practical competence and service to society. The buildings have been shaped by the assumption that serious human formation requires a dedicated physical container: a place set apart, with its own rhythms, its own architecture of encounter, and its own relationship to the natural world.

The main complex offers around 4,000 square metres of residential space, accommodating up to seventy people in private rooms and shared apartments. The design allows for different modes of occupation – short residencies, semester-length stays, and longer-term membership in the permanent community that forms the living core of Lakefront. Residents are not guests. They are co-inhabitants of a shared life, with all the ordinary friction and genuine intimacy that entails.

Good food, cooked together and eaten together, is not a detail. It is infrastructure.

The thousand square metres of communal space is where much of the most important work happens – not only in formal sessions but in the accumulated texture of daily life. Large rooms for gatherings and facilitated dialogue; smaller spaces for study, reflection and one-to-one conversation; a kitchen and dining room where shared meals serve as the most reliable daily practice of community.

What gives the site its particular character is its relationship to the landscape. The lake is immediately present – visible from the buildings, audible in summer, the first thing most residents encounter when they step outside. A sauna sits at the water's edge, and the Nordic practice of moving between heat and cold, social warmth and solitary exposure, has become one of the informal rituals that carries the community across seasons.

The campus of the Institute

The relationship is best understood as that between a university and its founding college: the Institute provides intellectual architecture, faculty, curriculum and connection to the global field; Lakefront provides the physical container, the community, and the conditions of daily life that make sustained developmental work possible. Neither is sufficient without the other. The primary programme through which they work together is the Ten Week Introduction to the Emerging Paradigm, offered both residentially and in a parallel online format for international participants.

Emerge Lakefront is not a venue for the Institute's work. It is where the work lives. The lake, the meals, the friction of shared life, the sauna at the water's edge – these are not amenities. They are the conditions under which something that cannot be taught in a seminar room becomes possible.
