Ekskäret Island

Oak Island – where the social field recedes and something quieter becomes audible.

Depth & stillness

Some thirty kilometres east of Stockholm, where the city gives way to the Baltic archipelago, lies Ekskäret – Oak Island. Small, wooded and surrounded by open water, it has been the home of the Ekskäret Foundation since its inception in 2008, and has served for decades as a centre for learning labs, retreats, contemplative practice and the kind of sustained inner work that ordinary life rarely makes room for.

In the context of the Institute, Ekskäret functions as a complement to Lakefront – not a parallel campus but a different register of the same developmental logic. Where Lakefront is organised around community and the friction and richness of sustained encounter with others, the island offers something the community setting cannot: genuine solitude, extended silence, and the particular quality of attention that arises when the noise of social life falls away.

A development that never faces solitude remains incomplete; a solitude that never returns to community becomes escapism.

This is not a small distinction. The inner development work that Emerge takes seriously has two movements that are not the same, even when they support each other. One is the work done in relationship – in dialogue, in community, in the encounter with others who reflect back what we cannot see in ourselves. The other is the work done in stillness – in contemplative practice, in silence, in sustained attention to one's own interior. Lakefront is designed for the first. Ekskäret is designed for the second. Both are necessary.

The island's retreats are led by experienced guides drawing on diverse contemplative traditions – not confessionally committed to any single lineage, but seriously engaged with the depth that multiple traditions have accumulated about the nature of mind and attention. For Institute participants, a silent retreat midway through or following the Ten Week Programme offers what no amount of seminar content can provide: the direct, unmediated encounter with one's own depth that all the frameworks are ultimately pointing toward. The map is not the territory – and Ekskäret is where participants are most likely to find the territory.

What the island makes possible

Ekskäret Island is where the frameworks run out and the territory begins. It is available to Institute participants as a natural punctuation point in the formation journey – and to those who come with no prior connection to the Institute, simply because they are ready for what silence and the archipelago make available.

Retreats on Ekskäret Island are offered throughout the year.
