The gathering

What happens when we remove the usual distinction between organiser and participant – and instead invite everyone to become a co-creator?

This is the experiment at the heart of Elevate.

For the past four years, Elevate has been bringing people together on Ekskäret Island to explore new ways of living, learning and creating community. The programme was co-created with the Ekskäret Foundation and has since developed into a recurring seasonal gathering, taking place four times each year.

Around forty people come together for a week at a time. Elevate is part retreat, part learning community, part social experiment. There is enough structure to create safety and coherence, but much of what happens is created by the people who come.

Participants cook together, care for the island, offer workshops and activities, share practices and conversations, make music, spend time in nature – or sometimes simply sit together by the fire.

There are no producers and consumers. We are all hosts.

A living experiment in community

Elevate began from a question that is central also to the work of Emerge Institute:

What kinds of environments help us become more fully human – individually and together?

Most of contemporary life places us in predefined roles. Someone organises; someone consumes. Someone teaches; someone learns. Someone provides the experience; someone evaluates whether it was worth the price.

Elevate deliberately loosens these roles.

Everyone who comes is invited to take responsibility both for their own experience and for the whole. You might offer a meditation, lead a dance session, share something from your professional work, organise a walk, cook dinner for forty people, start an unexpected conversation or simply notice what the group needs and respond.

The result is an ongoing experiment in self-organisation, generosity, responsibility, vulnerability and belonging.

It can also be great fun.

Elevate is intentionally playful. Music, movement, sauna, swimming, conversation, silence, workshops, creative practices and spontaneous adventures coexist within the same week. Participation is invited rather than prescribed, and people are encouraged to remain attentive to their own needs while also becoming active contributors to the group.

Elevate is sober, international and conducted in English. It welcomes people from different ages, cultures and walks of life, and particularly encourages newcomers who have never participated in gatherings of this kind before.

Four gatherings – four seasons

Elevate takes place four times each year, following the rhythm of the seasons.

Initiate in spring explores beginnings and what is seeking to emerge.

Celebrate in early summer turns towards vitality, gratitude and the abundance of life.

Integrate in autumn creates space to reflect, harvest and let go.

And as the year moves towards darkness and stillness, Hibernate invites us to slow down.

The basic form remains the same across the four gatherings, but the atmosphere and inquiry change with the season.

Elevate Hibernate

By late November, Ekskäret has entered a very different rhythm.

The days are short. The island is quiet. Forest, granite and cold water surround us, and darkness comes early.

Hibernate takes this seasonal movement seriously.

Rather than filling the final weeks of the year with still more activity, we create a week in which there is room to rest, reconnect and listen.

What has this year brought?
What are we carrying that we no longer need?
What needs time rather than action?
And what might be quietly preparing to emerge when the light returns?

Hibernate is not a silent retreat. There will still be conversation, workshops, shared meals, music, sauna, nature, creativity and play. But the overall invitation is towards a gentler rhythm: allowing the nervous system to settle, making room for reflection and enjoying the particular intimacy that can arise when a small group shares the island during the Nordic winter.

Each morning, small groups meet to share what is alive for them and witness one another’s journey. During the days, participants offer practices, conversations and activities to one another. There is also space to work: a co-working area is available for those who need to remain connected to projects during the week.

Why Elevate at Emerge Institute?

Emerge Institute explores how human beings can grow into more conscious participation in a world undergoing profound transformation.

Not all of that learning happens through courses, theories or facilitated programmes.

Some things can only really be learnt by creating a different social reality together and seeing what happens.

Elevate is one such experiment.

It asks what becomes possible when people meet one another with fewer predetermined roles; when participation replaces consumption; when responsibility is distributed rather than centralised; when individual freedom and collective care are held together; and when a temporary community becomes a laboratory for other ways of being.

You may leave with new ideas or practices. You may make friendships. You may discover something about yourself. Or you may simply return home rested, energised and seeing some part of your life differently.

There is no predetermined outcome.

The invitation is to come and help create the week you would like to be part of.
